About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can 72 hour visa-free apply to my following case?

I am planning to go on vacation from 12-2015 to 01-2015. I have already scheduled my fly from US to Viet Nam and stay there. During my stay in Viet Nam, I would like fly to Shanghai to visit my friends for approximately 48 hr. and then go back to Viet Nam before I fly back to US. Would 72 hour free transit apply for my case?

Thanks for your help

Robert, sorry to say that the 72h free transit policy does not apply to your case. Your departure country can't be the same with your destination country. So you can't fly from Vietnam to Shanghai and then back to Vietnam.

You have to fly over for instance Hong Kong or Macau on your way back or there.
You should be able to find a cheap flight from Shanghai to HK and then to Vietnam I would imagine though.
