I'm an American living and working in Japan with a 3-year work permit

I would like to visit China, can I get a Chinese tourist visa through the PRC Embassy, or do I have to go through a travel agent? Do they offer the multiple-entry/12 month validity option? Will a legitimate travel agency charge more than the 15,000 yen you have list above?

Thanks very much.

You can apply by yourself, but it's advised that you apply through a travel agent. You can apply for the six-month/12-month or even ten-year multiple entry permit. If you use an agent, of course you need to pay more money. They will charge some service fees.
