About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Clarifications on the 72-hours visa exemption

1) Would the following routes work for the 72-hour transit permit exemption by air?
a) Singapore > Shanghai > Hong Kong > Singapore; OR
b) Singapore > Shanghai > Malaysia > Singapore

2) Are the following the documents he needs to have to apply for the 72-hour transit permit exemption upon his arrival in Shanghai? Anything else I have missed here?
a) Passport
b) Confirmed seat ticket to 3rd country

3) What is the cost and in what currency, for applying the 72-hour transit permit exemption upon arrival?

4) Which counter should he go upon arriving at Shanghai airport to apply for the 72-hour transit permit exemption?

Hi there!
1. Both routes work for the 72-hour free transit rule.
2. In addition to the passport and confirmed ticket, he may need the entry permit for the 3rd country. Remember that he should tell the airline about the intention to use this service before the flight arrives.
3. The 72-hour transit service is free of charge.
4. He should go to the special counter for applying free transit under the instruction of the airport staff.

Hi, thank you for your replies. May I clarify further:-
1) Entry permit, meaning, visa? for french, I know he does not require a visa to Hong Kong and Malaysia.
2) If the leg Shanghai > Hong Kong or Malaysia, is a connecting flight back to Singapore, but 2 tickets, i.e. Shanghai to Hong Kong on CX in one ticket, and Singapore > Shanghai and Hong Kong to Singapore on SQ in one ticket, would that be qualify for the 72-hour? or
3) If the leg Shanghai > Hong Kong or Malaysia, is a connecting flight back to Singapore, but 3 tickets, i.e. Singapore to Shanghai on SQ in one ticket, Shanghai to Hong Kong on CX in one ticket, and Hong Kong to Singapore on CX in one ticket (same airline as Shanghai to Hong Kong but on different tickets), would that qualify for the 72-hour free transit?

1. Well, if he doesn’t need the entry permit to HK and Malaysia, then it’s not required to show to the immigration officer.
2. It doesn’t matter whether you have two separate or three separate tickets to go out and get back to Singapore.

Thanks Linda, meaning, does it matter if is Hong Kong is a connecting flight leaving rom Shanghai to Singapore, as long as traveler has a separate ticket for Shanghai to Hong Kong? Thank you.
