Is it possible to upgrade a ticket?

If soft sleeper tickets are fully booked and so you have a hard seat or sleeper ticket, is it ever possible to upgrade on the train if there is a free space? (i.e. if someone with a soft sleeper ticket doesn't show up?)

Similarly, is it possible at the station to pay for a last minute upgrade if there are cancellations?

If some people cancel their tickets at last minute, you may do the upgrade at station or after boarding as well. You can ask the staff if there is a space and that you can pay the difference for the
upgrade.
