Indonesian passport with 18 hours transit in Guangzhou.

Hello.. We are a family travelling to Los Angeles via GZ flying China Southern. Transit time 18 hours. Do we need a visa? and the most important thing is that will the check in counter staff let us fly from Jakarta without the China transit visa? Thank You before hand
