James, Zhang Qian had two expeditions to th Western Regions during Western Han Dynasty. From then on, this famous trade route came into being. His first expedition started in 139BC. Then you can figure out how old this road is, 2154 years.

You should understand that this road crossed many cities and countries. Of course, there are still people who live in these cities. Take Xian and Dunhuang for example, people still live in these two places.
