About:China Visa Entries / Validity / Duration of Stay

To get a visa to China do I need a ticket with an exit, or can I enter, and buy an onward ticket

To get a tourist L type to PRC do I need a ticket with an exit, or can I enter, and buy an onward ticket once there. If I need an exit ticket, would a ticket exiting from a point in mainland China to Hong Kong count?

To you both: if you cann't provide an invitation letter, then the exit ticket is a must for the application. I personally think the ticket from mainland to Hong Kong counts. However, if the officer is strict, he may ask you to also provide the ticket from Hong Kong to another country.
