Yes, he needs to apply for new work permit and resident permit. But he needn't get back to Malaysia. First, he should get the release letter from his old employer. If his old employer doesn't cancel his employment certificate, he needs to cancel it first. He will receive a notice that his old employment certificate is cancelled. With the release letter and notice, his new employer can apply for new work permit for him. Then he can get new resident permit.
For you and your kid, you need to reapply for the resident permit too because your husband's old employer can report your situation to the local entry and exit management bureau and then your resident permits are cancelled.
