About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

On a cruise with a stop in Shanghai

I am a US citizen and aboard a cruise ship which stops less then 72 hrs in Shanghai.
Do I have to apply for a visa to go ashore for the day?

Darlene, as you go in and out by cruise ship, you do not qualify for the 72-hour free transit. If your layover is shorter than 24 hours, you can probably use the 24-hour direct transfer policy. If the layover time is longer, you have to apply for an entry permit in advance.

Yes, only 8 hrs in Shanghai. How does the 24 hr direct transfer policy work?

It works for you. If you want to go ashore, you can just apply for a temporary stay permit at the port office.
