Temple Of Heaven (Tiantan), Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square

First I need to remind you that you should visit Tian’anmen Square first, and then the Forbidden City. They are quite near, and the square seems like the gateway for the Forbidden City. If you want to reach the Forbidden City by subway, you need to reach Tian’ammen first.

You should take the Exit A2, not Exit A and walk about 450 yards to the park.

If you want to go to the Forbidden city by subway, you need to exit from the east gate, too, where you can have access to the Tiantan Dongmen subway station. Take the subway line 3 to Dongdan Station, where you can transfer to line 1 to Tiananmen East Station. Take the Exit A, you will arrive at Tian’anmen Square. After the tour on the square, walk about 0.6 miles to the Forbidden City.

BTW, if you will visit the Forbidden City in the afternoon, you'd better reserve a ticket in advance. In case they sell out.

If I turn my visit into Tian’anmen Square, Forbidden City and Temple Of Heaven as your suggestions and I will use the subway, which station I must stop. Is it Tian’anmen West or Tian’anmen East and which gate I must go. Can I walk from Tian’anmen to Forbidden City. After that I will go to Temple Of Heaven, which gate I must go out from Forbidden City to be able to access subway station to the Temple Of Heaven

1. Both Tiananmen East and West are Ok. The distances to the square are almost the same.
2. Currently, visitors can only enter the Forbidden City from south gate (Meridian Gate, or Wumen), which is close to Tiananmen Square and exit from north gate.
3. Yes, you can walk from the square to the palace. Actually, this is the route for most visitors.
4. After getting out of the the north gate, you need to go back to the square area to take the subway. Otherwise, you need to make a transfer; take bus 109 to Dongsilukou East, then walk to Dongsi to take subway line 5 to reach the east gate of the Temple of Heaven (Tiantan Dongmen).
