About:Nanjing Transportation Smart Card

So how does the transportation card work

i am looking to buy one. My understanding is it costs so much but that amount is placed on the card for use. you get a discount on fares so it makes sense to get one. or is it you purchase the card then load cash on it and you lose the money paid for the card

You reload money into the card, and with the card, you can get a discount when using subway or buses. Then the money in the card will be deducted at the discounted price.
Before leaving China, you can also return the card to get the unused money back. Just protect the card well and do not damage it.

And I pay 30 yuan for the card first, then load the card with money to use at the subway, buses, etc.? The 30 yuan does not go on the card to be used?

The CNY30 is exclusively for the card itself, which cannot be used to take the subway and bus. If you do not want to use the card, you can get your CNY30 back by refunding it as long as the card is not damaged.
