About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need to ask the airline or is sufficient apply at the check in desk the day of departure?

I am flying jakarta > pudong > Milan on the night flight with Garuda indonesia on 2nd sept arriving on the 3rd in Shanghai & departing on 5th noon for italy with Alitalia.

Yes, you need to tell the airline that you intend to use this free transit policy before the flight arriving in Shanghai.
