About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travelling on Air New Zealand

Hi

I have a client travelling London to Australia and then Shanghai to London and looking to stay less than 72 hours in Shanghai, he is UK holder. Looks like he can get the visa-free but I have been informed to speak to the airline involved (Air New Zealand) and they can't confirm to me that they will allow him to travel without a visa but they can't denied it eaither... can the airline do that? Thanks

Nick, if the client takes the plane from Australia to Shanghai and then to London and he doesn't stop in any other Chinese city, he will qualify for the 72-hour free transit. However, if the airline does not know much about this policy, it may not allow him to board in.

Thanks for your reply.

The other issue I have just found that is the ticket is not one but lots of one-ways which don't think will allow the free transit anyway... I will tell client to get visa while in Australia.

What is frustrating about all of this is that even when visas get easier, airlines do not bother to update their policies. In the end free transit or not better stick to the visa. What the Chinese should do is an online e-entry permit which will cut out of this nonsense from the airline. Sorry for the moan and thank you again

On the other hand, these policies do change often and can be inconsistent from one point of entry to another. The conditions that apply can be confusing. An online e-entry permit is an excellent idea. Even an online qualification app would be very helpful.
