About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I use the 72 hour visa free transit if Im going from USA to Shanghai for two nights and then back home to

If you fly from the US to Shanghai then back to US directly, you cannot take advantage of the 72-hour free transit policy. My suggestion is that you can take the flights from the US to Hong Kong to Shanghai and then back to the US. In this way, you are eligible.
