i am invited for conference. what kind visa shall i need?

I live in Michigan. can I apply by mail in Chicago consulate? Also do I need one to attend conference one week in Hunan province .Dr. Cho

Yes, you need to apply for a F type. The invitation letter from the conference host is required. Mail applications are no longer available. The applicants are required to submit their applications in person or assign some else (even an agency) to submit and pick up for them too.
