About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

NRT-PEK-NRT-ORD, will I be able to use the 72 hour visa?

I will be traveling from Tokyo to Beijing and then from Beijing to Chicago via Tokyo. Is that not allowed since I'm flying back to the US via the same place I arrived in China from (Tokyo)?

Thanks!

You are right, it is not allowed. If you want to make of the free transit, you need to take a direct plane from Beijing to the US.
