Overlay 14 hrs in Shanghai, DO we need a visa to get out the airport to a city hotel?

We are flying with China Easten Airline from HK to Toronto, the overlay in Shanghai will be 14 hour (arrive 9:50pm, leave next day 1200 noon. Do we need one for the 14 hrs to go to a city hotel?
