M visa extension, do I have to leave China?

I'm with an M type 90 days and one entry, and I would like to extend it for another 90 days. If I obtain the extension do I have to leave and came back with the new visa or it is valid even if not leaving ?
Thanks

Elena, if you can get the extension, it will be valid as long as you are not leaving. Once you exit from PRC, the extension will become invalid.
