X2 into residency permit?

I've been accepted to study language in Shenyang. The acceptance letter shows a duration of 5 months. I've told the university I would like to finish the 3 remaining levels, so I would want to study for 18 months. They said if that's what I decide they can change me X2 into a residency permit. I've read things saying this is impossible and other things saying its possible. Which is it?

If it is not possible and I max out my X2 can I go to HK and get another one that will allow me to study another 6 months?

Jack, if your school agreed, then you should have been able to change X2 into X1. In fact, you just apply for a X1 instead. If local entry and exit management bureau requires you to apply abroad, then you can go to HK to apply for X1. After getting X1, you need to change it into a resident permit in Shenyang.
