Mike, if you plan to stay with her for long time, then you should try to apply for a 10 years tourist type. It's valid for 10 years. Each time you can acquire a duration of 60 days. It means that you need to exit every 60 days. I don't think it's a problem for you. You can just go to HK and get back to activate another duration of 60 days.

Mary, thank you for the information. I plan on staying with her for three-four years and then come back to America to live and raise a family together.

Mary, since I can fly to HK and return on my 10 years type, do I need to have any special visa to go to HK and back to China?

No, you don't need it. Hong Kong allows American passport holders to enter for a stay not over 90 days.
