15 hr layover in Guangzhou, can I for sure have a free visa?

I am flying via CAN, I have an Australian passport with an expiring UK Visa, Does this qualify me for the free visa, as I need to layover for 15 hrs till the flight onwards to Australia and China Southern guarantees free accomodation over 8 hrs layover so I would need one to exit the airport.

Yes, you can take a free-visa transfer there. Just apply for a stay permit at the frontier inspection and you will be allowed to leave the airport. As Southern Airlines arranges free accommodation, they may help you with the permit thing. You'd better consult them for confirmation ahead of time.
