I have been invited to attend a Commencement of Work function for good fortune and good luck

I am a consultant on a project and have been invited to attend this function. Firstly, is it rude if I do not attend? and secondly, should I take anything (such as a gift) for the owners of the development?
I do not wish to offend and would like to be respectful of their custom for future dealings.

Jon, if you are invited, you should present yourself at the commencement. If you really have something busy, you should inform them that you can't come as early as possible. It's ok that you bring a gift for congratulation.
