Tourist visa between Hong Kong and Beijing

So I am going to be flying from Hong Kong back to the United States. I have a one night layover in Beijing. As a U.S. Citizen, would I need any type to leave the airport and visit Beijing for that evening?

No, you don't need it because you qualify for the 72-hour free transit policy.
