Australian passport holder wanting to travel through china

If I travel to Hong Kong, which I believe we do not need a visa for tourists, can I get one to mainland from there and how hard would it be?

Jim, as the regulation goes, if you don't have Hong Kong residence permit, you can't apply from there. Though some agencies can do it for you and you can try your luck at the Commissioner Office of the MFA, it's risky to do so. You had better apply for one before your trip in Australia.
