Airline Employee - Non Revenue Travel

My mom is a retired airline employee, and I fly as a non revenue passenger. I would like to fly from DCA to HKG, HKG to PVG, and PVG to DCA. I understand that because I fly standby, I won't be eligible for the 72 hour transit. If I were to enter PVG with the intent of continuing onto DCA and never leave the airport, would I be able to do this? I would not have a confirmed seat from PVG to DCA, as I would be flying stand by. The difference in flight time between my arrival into PVG until the time I leave would be less than 24 hours (as long as I get a seat on the plane).

Eric, confirmed air tickets are required. If she can't provide confirmed air tickets, she won't be able to make use of the free transit.
