About:Dress Code in China

What is the line between formal and casual?

I am going to China to teach maths to 16yr olds in Suzhou for a month in July. I'm assuming it will be very hot for me coming from the UK, so don't want to wear too much and bake, or insult anyone either.

Regarding free time - are shorts acceptable for girls, or is this more of a male thing and skirts or dresses would be expected? Also, can skirts or dresses be worn that are just above the knee, or is below the knee a standard?

For teaching I am assuming sensible office-like attire. Is it expected to cover your shoulders in all social situations or is this not an issue?

Jen, teachers' dresses should be a bit more formal. You can't wear too casually. If you wear skirts or dresses, you should make sure that they are long enough, below the knee. And I think you may not wear shorts. Trousers or long skirts are much better. If you teach in the classroom, it won't be too hot because the air-conditioner is equipped.

During your free time, it is flexible to wear shorts and skirts. Just don't be too exposed.
