Renew M or F visa in mainland China?

Hello, I got offered a six months Internship and have received an invitation letter. This morning I went to the consulate and they told me that they can only give me 60 days one with that invitation and that if I wanted to renew I would need to do it outside China. Alternatively I would have to get an "Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit" but the company said that this is really hard. Did the consulate person give me a correct information? Can I get more time under a M or F type? Or, can renew inside and how many times? Thanks a lot!

Tomas, generally speaking, the longest stay duration of the F or M type should be three months, but the consulate officials has the right to give you a stay duration which they think resonable. No matter whether the information they gave is correct or not, you have to follow their advice. If you enter China with the 60-day F or M type, perhaps you can extend it once within mainland before it expires. However, the extension cannot be more than 60 days, so you still need to renew it when the extension runs out. It's possible that you have to renew it outside.

My suggestion is try to persuade the company to get you an invitation letter from duly autorized unit so as to avoid the potential troubles.

Thank you Boyce!
I have tried to get the company to provide me with the invitation from duly authorized unit. They said that is too hard to do it, that no one else needed it and that it would be necessary in my case. So I am hoping that I get at least six months duration. From you answer, I understood that I can renew it in mainland for more two moths, so I will do that if necessary. Hopefully I will not be obligated to leave china to do so.
Thanks for you help, I guess I just have to hope for the consulate official's good will in this case.
Thank you, Tomas
