price for registering a resident address with police?

Question

Last time in China, I registered my address within 30 days in China with the local police.  I have returned and wish to register within 30 days but the local police here want Y2000 for me to register.  Anyone know if there is to be a price?

Eldon, for all I know, you needn’t to pay anything to register at the local police, but you are required to register within 24 hours after your arrival. I assume the police asks for CNY 2000 just because you register too late and it’s kind of penalty.
