Paul, after you enter, you shuld go and get the residence permit at the local exit and entry administration bureau within 30 days. The required documents are different in different cities.
However, the common documents to be submitted are your passport, application form, recent photo, your wife's ID card, a temporary residence registration form, etc.

It's right that you wife's financial backgroun will affect the stay duration you are gonna get. The consular officer may take this into consideration when determining how long to be issued for you.

If you wife does not have a work now, the consular officer may not give you the Q1 type. Perhaps she or he will give you the Q2 type instead.

You can deposit Y60,000 RMB into your Wifes account, that is the normal amount that gets you a year resident permit. but NOT all cities will ask for this. I only worry that if the PSB asks her about her job and if she doesn't have a job than they'll ask to see proof of funds to support your stay in China.
