ORD to Beijing to Hong Kong - direct free?

We are traveling to Hong Kong, but have a 6hr layover in Beijing. Does the direct free apply for this? Are we able to leave the airport and explore? Is 6hrs enough time to go to the city?

We also have the same 6hr layover on the way home, but our flight is Bangkok to Beijing to Chicago, two weeks later. Do we need to apply twice?

Thank you!

Ben, you can enjoy the free transit policy on both your ways to Hong Kong and back to Chicago. During the layover period, you can go out of the airport and explore the city. However, I'm afraid the time is not enough for going to the downtown area. You can go around the airport to relax yourself.
