The issuance of D visa is unheard of at this point as few qualify for one. If you have no intention to seek employment, a Q1 visa is sufficient but be sure to research for the detailed rules relating to your residence permit, which are determined by the State Immigration Administration responsible for your wife's province/region of household registration. There are a few instances when Q1 visa holders were forced to leave China because the province refused their request for residence permits.
