About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

My route will be Milan-Shanghai-HK-Milan. Do I quality for the 72 hours free transit?

I hold an Australia passport.

Yes, your route is ok. However, you need to make sure that your flights into and out of mainland China will not pass by any other Chinese cities. For example, if your flight from Milan passes by Beijing or your flight from Shanghai to HK stops at Guangzhou, then you won't be qualified.
