Do I have to change my visa type where I will be working?

I hope to do an internship in Beijing in the summer and will need to get my student residence permit endorsed for this. Do I have to do this after arriving in Beijing or can I do it before I leave Ningbo where I am currently studying? Do you know how long the conversion will take?
