About:FAQ of Chinese Visa Application

want to know when I should apply for it since I have only ever applied for 30 day visas.

I want to apply for a 3 month L type, planned stay of 73 days, I have received both tourist and student types on previous occasions.

Does the 90 days or however long the validity I am given begin on the date of issue or the date of entry?

June, the validity is usually marked as "Enter before". As long as you enter before that date, you should't have a problem. However, the duration of stay is counted for 00:00 next day. For example, if your duration of stay is 30 days and you enter on May 15, then 30 days duration is counted from 00:00 of May 16.

You plan to stay for 73 days. So I think you should appy for a multiple one. You know, duration of stay for L type is usually 30 days. If you acquire six months multiple L type, then just need to exit every 30 days.
