I was told by a visa agency that I no longer need a visa to travel to Chongqing. Is this correct?

Jim, I don't think it's true. However, if you are in a transit in Chongqing, you can probably use the 72 hour free transit policy, so that the visa is not needed. By this way, you can stay in Chongqing for only three days or so.
