i am flying in from london to beijing on air china on 15th may

and then taking connection on 15th May to Shanghai by Air China. Do I need to collect my baggage in BJ and then recheck?

As you use Air China for the whole trip, you can have the luggage check-through service. That is to say, the airline will help you handle the luggage and it will be directly transported to Shanghai. U don't need to claim luggages at PEK.
