work with a tourist type entry permit

I had a z visa to work but quit my job because I wasn't too crazy about it. My work permit has expired and my z type as well. I'm applying for a tourist L type but my question is can I work in China if I have a tourist type entry permit. Or do I have to go back to my home country to reapply for the z type.
