About:FAQ of Chinese Visa Application

Does an American Citizen need a Visa to fly from USA to Shanghai for a stay of less than 72 Hours?

Staying in Shanghai for approximately 48-60 hours and then departing to Bangkok then enroute to Japan and inturn to USA?

No, you don't need it because you qualify for the 72-hour free transit policy.
