About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Stop over at same country, would i still qualify for the 72 hour free transit?

Hi, I'm a US citizen and I plan to go from US to Shanghai and then to Japan, but my flight to shanghai has a stop over in Japan. Thanks!
