About:China Private Visit Visa

My wife will study in Shanghai. Can we request the visas X1 for her and S2 for me at the same time?

1) My wife will go to study in Shanghai for a year. I will accompany her. Can we request X1 for her and S2 for me at the same time in order that we can fly together? If not, can I travel with a tourist L type and change it there for an S2?
2) Do we need to show return tickets when we apply for the entry permits?

Hi Sergio! You can apply for the X1 and S2 at the same time. To apply for the S2 type, you also need an invitation letter from her school. The return tickets are not needed to apply for both of your entry permits.

Thank you Miffy for your quick answer.

One question: the invitation of her school to me should be to what? Visit? Company?

I appreciate very much your answer because ukcentre@visaforchina.org told me that it was impossible to get both at the same time, that if we wanted to travel together I would have to apply first for a tourist type and then go out of China to apply for the S2. They told me they did not know If I could apply for the S2 inside and change the tourist visa. Do you know if this can be done?
I wait for your comments. Thank you. S.

Sergio, the invitation letter should be addressed to you for accompanying your wife.

It's possible that you can change the tourist type entry permit to S2 type when you are inside China, but you are not assured to get it.

My suggestion is to try your best to get the S2 type before your entry, which can save a lot of troubles.
