72-Hour free stay clarification

I am flying from Los Angeles to Taiwan for 2 weeks then flying from Taiwan to Shanghai. I can be there for 72 hours before my flight from Shanghai back to Los Angeles visa free, correct? How does it affect my trip that Taiwan is a third region?

Raul, yes, you can enjoy 72 hours free transit in Shanghai because your route meets the requirements. However, you should make sure that your flight taking off from Shanghai won't transit or stop over at any other Chinese cities.
