Does your invitation letter have to come through snail mail by someone physically in China?

Hello,
My brother is a US citizen and will be in PRC teaching for two months. I want to visit him while he is there but in order for him to invite me does he have to already be there and write me paper letter and send it through snail mail in order to invite me to stay with him?

It looks like my other option would be to just book my flight and then apply for one, if I choose that option what is the chances they deny my application and I have to cancel my flight?

Thanks!
Cheyenne

Cheyenne, the invitation letter may be in the form of fax, photocopy or computer printout, but the consular officer may require you to submit the original of the invitation letter.

If you choose to apply with your flight tickets, you should also provide hotel reservations. The chance that they will deny your application is not big if your itinerary documents are very much detailed.

I'll be staying with my brother so I won't have any hotel reservations. So does that mean that my only option is to get the invitation letter from him? Can he write it before he leaves for China or does he have to be there when he writes it?

If you have any other friends in PRC, you can ask them to send you the invitation letter too. Since the invitation letter and copies of his passport information page and valid Chinese entry permit or resident permit, it is better that he is in there when sending you the invitation letter.
