travel visa & x1 type

Received an offer to study in Beijing, I know that X1 type holder have to apply for a temporary residence permit within 30 days upon entry into China, applying for this I need documents issued by the school after registration. Just wondering what if I want to go earlier to familiarise myself with the city, can I first apply a travel entry permit, then before the registration day change it to a X1 type in China?
