About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Going to Shanghai from YVR Vancouver, Canada to Shanghai, Pudong, China

I'm planning to take a trip to Shanghai and just stay in Pu Dong area for sightseeing. Afterwards I plan to return back to Canada.

1. Do I qualify for the 72 hour visa?
2. What happens if I overstay my 72 hour window?
3. Is it possible to extend the 72 hour window in case the return flight gets cancelled or something?
4. " An onward ticket with confirmed seat are needed" - What if the return flight is a standby seat?

Thank you so much for responding.

Hi, Jayson! As you are flying from Canada to Shanghai and then back to Canada, your route is not regarded as a valid transit, so it's a pity to tell that you are not eligible for the 72-hr free transit policy. In addition, you can’t overstay after the 72 hours in theory. However, if the flight gets cancelled or something emergent happens, you should apply for one entry permit at the local PSB.

If the return flight is a standby seat, the officer may not allow you to use the free transit facility.
