Extend a 90-day L visa?

I came to China on Jan. 24, with a 90-day single entry L type to visit a friend. I'm looking to stay an extra 2-3 months, and right now I'm planning to fly to Hong Kong to get a new one. Is it possible to get either an extension, or an entirely new one without having to fly to Hong Kong or elsewhere? If so, what would my procedure to get an extension be? If not, is flying to Hong Kong a viable option? I'm staying about half an hour away from Shanghai right now.

Curtis, you can extend the L type without having to fly to Hong Kong. Before your current L type expires, you ought to go to the local Exit and Entry Administration Bureau to get the extension, but I’m not sure whether you can get extra 2-3 months’ stay. Maybe the officer will only give you one month extension.

Documents required for the extension are:
1. Valid passport.
2. Valid Temporary Accommodation Registration Form issued by a local police station.
3. Completely filled APPLICATION FORM with recent half-length, white background, bareheaded, full-faced 2-inch color photo.
4. Your friend’s Household Register or Resident Identification Card and a letter in Chinese addressed to the Exit-Entry Administration.
