USA-HK doesn't matter in this case.

HK - Shanghai (2 nights) - Tokyo should be fine. Just remember that the timer starts the second you land, and ends the second you leave.

Also remember to register at a local police station if you are not staying in a hotel!

May have been mistaken about the "timer" as noted in the article above.

Appreciate the help Tom.

I assume if we chose to fly to Beijing as opposed to Shangahi (going to spend less then 72 hours in either Shanghai or Beijing before flying onto Tokyo) it wouldn't change the scenario?

To clarify, HK doesn't start the 72 hour timer because it:
a) doesn't require entry permit for US passport holders for up to 90(?) day stay
b) is considered a different region then Beijing/Shanghai

So in the above scenario, we wouldn't have to make any applications/arrangements ahead of time? All we have to do is alert our airline for HK to Beijing travel on the day of travel before boarding plane?

Thanks!
