About:China Visa Application in UK

Z visa to an X1 type

I'm a UK citizen currently working in Beijing on a Z type but in September I will be starting university here. I need to transfer to an X type for long term study. Is it possible to do this from China or will I have to leave and re enter on the new one? Could I apply in Hong Kong?

Michael, as you are holding a Z type at present, I believe you have a temporary residence permit, right? If the remaining validity of the residence permit is relatively long, it is more likely to change the Z type into an X1. Anyway, it’s possible to do so at the relevant exit and entry administration agency. If being denied by the officer, I think you can try to do it in Hong Kong, but not guaranteed to get it.
