Duration of stay, research visit

I am planning to go to China for research purposes but I have problems finding the maximum duration of stay. As I understand it I should apply for the F visa. In that case, I find some sources saying up to 90 days (which is fine, I plan to stay around 75 days), but someone at the embassy said it was maximum 30 days, otherwise it is a working type.

So which information is correct? what type should I get?

Roger, if you can apply for the F type, then the maximum stay duration can be 90 days. However, if you plan to stay a relatively long time in China for doing researching at your partner’s site, it can be regarded as a short-time job. So the officer has reasonable reason to ask you to apply for the working type. If the officer at the embassy insists that you should apply for the working type, then you have to apply for it. Otherwise, they may reject your application.
