UK Passport Holders making a day trip to Beijing. Can we use the 72-hour transit?

My wife and I are UK Passport holders and will be staying in Seoul, Korea. We plan to make a day trip to Beijing from Seoul returning to Seoul. Does the 72-hour transit visa apply to us.
