About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

We're flying into Shanghai, staying overnight in a hotel, then boarding a cruise ship & sailing out.

Can we apply for a transit visa when we arrive?

Vomvas, If you total layover time is not more than 24 hours, the transit entry permit is not needed because you can make use of the 24 hour free transit policy. You can apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport to go into the city and live in the hotel.

Thank you for your reply. Everything that I see online says that it has to be arriving on a flight and, then within 24 hours, leaving that same airport on a flight. We are arriving at PVG, staying overnight and then within 24 hours leaving on a cruise ship. Will the free 24 hour transit still work for us? Is there anywhere I can print out the information just in case the airline says that we need an entry permit? Thank you for your time!

Hey, Beverly! The 24 hour free transit is open to ferry ports, so you are qualified for using this policy. You can get this information from the embassy's website and print it out.
